Welcome to enjoyments
No other phenomenon is so closely connected to the senses and human
feelings as sound. You cannot directly die from sounds, but you can be
extremely irritated by a noisy neighbour or his lawnmower. The sounds
from Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra are not very different from those of
any other Nordic symphony orchestra, yet you may get entranced by one
and grieve about another. In daily life we sense music and other
background sounds several hours each day whether we like it or not. And
all this is related to acoustics, from instruments as sound sources,
through different sound systems and rooms to our own perception.
This is the reason why we have planned a number of cultural
activities with an emphasis on music for the hundreds of interested
participants at this congress. All the concert events are free of
charge for ICA participants, except the Nidaros Cathedral Organ
concert on Wednesday night.
Already at the Opening ceremony we will meet the internationally well
known jazz sextet The Brazz Brothers, the highly praised chamber
orchestra Trondheim Soloists with excerpts from their famous Grieg CD
and finally one of Trondheim's own outstanding musicians, fiddler
Torill Aasegg.
ICA Club
And afterwards, the music goes on in a variety of styles, with 20
minutes mini concerts during the lunch breaks, small pieces during
coffee breaks and 45 minutes evening concerts in our ICA Club in the
Student Union Building, a circular, red and odd building that has been
the major social spot for students and academics, a creative centre for
music, theatre performances, stage productions and political
discussions for more than 65 years.
Here the last part of the lunch hour will be a perfect frame for a
music-technology performance with Rolf Wallin's "Yo", a chamber
concert with the Cicignonkvintetten, improvisations with
church-musician Henning Sommerro and jazz-musician John Pål
Inderberg and finally, Schola Sanctae Sunnivae, a Gregorian chamber
choir inspired by the French tradition.
Evening concerts
In the ICA Club you will also be able to hear more from The Brazz
Brothers one of the nights. After a Round Table discussion relax with
friends and enjoy the exiting ensemble and the atmosphere in this
building. Another night, meet the excellent group Farmers Market that
combines jazz and Slavonic music at a tremendous pace.
A concert on the newly restored unique baroc Wagnerorgan (worth a
convention by itself) in the Nidaros Cathedral will be in contrast to
the music program mentioned so far and illustrates some of the span
of living music in Trondheim.
At the banquet on Friday night we are looking forward to a visit from
Cantus, the "Choir of the World" at Llangollen, Wales 1993. The 34
young women aged 20-34 have a broad repertoire from chorals to swing
and cabaret. We know you will like them.
MusICA : The ICA'95 Music Concept
In order to make the ICA'95 time signals and some of the music
performances directly connected to the ICA abbreviation itself, a
couple of musical phrases - exclusively composed and produced for this
Trondheim Congress - are based on the musical notes C and A,
interpreting the letters ICA as "lots of C's and A's". This "CA"-based
musical brickstone may even be performed in different musical styles
during the ICA'95 week as a part of the MusICA sound design.
More than music
Ringve Museum with its excellent display of ancient musical
instruments, expands the opening hours to fit with the program of the
Congress. We do recommend guided tours at the museum. You will find a
Ringve Museum folder in your Congress Info.
A Special ICA'95 postmark with the
Congress logo will be used at the post office situated at the North
East wing of the NTH Main building. Deliver your postcards there, and
the receiver will get a collector's item in addition to your
greetings from Trondheim.
