Welcome to the website of the BEATS project. The acronym "BEATS" is an abbreviation of the project title "Bandwidth-Efficient and Adaptive Transmission Schemes for Wireless Multimedia Communications". BEATS is a part of the IKT-2010 research programme funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR). The main research ideas covered by the BEATS project are:

  • Explore rate-adaptive coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in combination with advanced antenna diversity.
  • Explore signal processing aspects of smart antennas for further bandwidth-efficiency increase, optimum space-time detection and space-time multiplexing.
  • Design of joint source-channel coding schemes for optimal efficiency and robustness, particularly in uplink transmission of source-specific, high-capacity parts of multimedia data streams, e.g. video.
  • Design of transcoding schemes in heterogenous systems, for efficient digitization and coding of jointly source-channel coded signals, e.g. after decoding at the basestation, before further transmission takes place in the system.
  • Design and study of optimized Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) schemes.
  • Estimation and analysis of wireless communication channels, in order to establish realistic benchmarks for practical system performance.

The collaborating researchers are:

  • Professor, dr.ing. Geir E. Øien (project manager),
Signal Processing Group, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
  • Professor, dr.scient. Kjell J. Hole,
Coding Theory Group, University of Bergen / Signal Processing Group, NTNU.
  • Professor, dr.ing. Tor A. Ramstad,
    Signal Processing Group, NTNU.
  • Professor, dr.ing. Nils Holte,
    Signal Processing Group, NTNU.
  • Associate Professor, dr.ing. Lars Lundheim,
    Signal Processing Group, NTNU.
  • Dr.ing. Henrik Holm
  • Dr.ing. student Bengt Holter (graduated Jun. 14, 2005)
  • Dr.ing. student Greg Harald Håkonsen (graduated Jun. 29, 2007 )
  • Dr.ing. student Fredrik Hekland (graduated Jun. 1, 2007)
  • Dr.ing. student Duc Van Duong (graduated Sept. 21, 2006)
  • Dr.ing. student Lin Gang (graduated Nov. 10, 2006)
  • Dr.ing. student Anna Na Kim (graduated Nov. 25, 2005)

Professor Hole will be residing in Bergen with an office address at the University of Bergen. In addition,
Ola Jetlund, Associate Professor Mohamed-Slim Alouini, Professor David Gesbert, and research scientists Bjarne Risløw, Pål Orten, and Per-Hjalmar Lehne, are external collaborators on the project. Jetlund is a dr.ing student (graduated Apr. 8, 2005) of the TURBAN project (TURBo codes, Access and Network Technology). Alouini joined the Electrical Engineering program at Texas A&M University at Qatar in August 2005, where his current research interests include the design and performance analysis of wireless communication systems. Gesbert is a Professor in the Mobile Communications Department of the Eurecom Institute. Eurecom is a leading graduate school and research center devoted to communication systems, located in HighTech-strong Sophia Antipolis on the French Riviera. Risløw and Orten are both with Nera Research, while Lehne is with Telenor Research & Development.
