How to reach Trondheim
Traveling by Air
Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) is the local airport of Trondheim and is located about 30 kilometers to the north-east of the city center. The airport offers regular domestic flights to and from most major cities in Norway, as well as daily flights with service to several European cities.
Direct Flights to Trondheim
- Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) offers multiple non-stop daily flights to Copenhagen Airport Kastrup (CPH), Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), and London Stansted Airport (STN).
- Copenhagen is the Scandinavian hub for Star Alliance, (with partner airlines SAS, United, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Air New Zealand), and offers excellent connections to most parts of the world
- Amsterdam is the central European hub for the Skyteam Airline Alliance (with partner airlines KLM, Northwest, Continental and Air France), with even more connections to all parts of the world
- Nonstop flights between London (UK) and Trondheim are offered by the Norwegian airline (www.norwegian.no)
Flights through Oslo
- Many international travelers to Trondheim go through Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL).
- Oslo Airport is the second largest airport in Scandinavia and offers connections to most major cities in Europe. OSL has frequent flights to the important hubs including Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), London Airports Gatwick and Heathrow (LGW, LHR), Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Frankfurt am Main (FRA) and Paris Airports de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY). In addition, Continental offers transatlantic flights to New York (Newark, EWR).
- There are up to two departures with service to Trondheim Airport per hour in the daytime. Flight time from Oslo to Trondheim is about one hour. Airlines with service to Trondheim (TRD) from Oslo (OSL) include SAS, Norwegian, and Wideroe.
- Note: Some budget airlines offer international flights to Oslo taking you to Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF) rather than to OSL. If your connecting flight to Trondheim is scheduled to depart from OSL, please factor in an additional 2 hours of travel time by bus between TRF and OSL.
- Note: For international travelers to Trondheim through Oslo, you must first collect your luggage and pass through customs on arriving at Oslo Airport. You then check in / drop your luggage again at the airline’s / handling agent’s desk in the Departure Hall. Afterwards, you pass through the security control point and go to your designated departure gate.
From Trondheim Airport to the City
Airport Shuttle
- The airport shuttle (Flybussen) to the center of the city corresponds with all flight arrivals, and is the easiest (and cheapest) way to get to the city. It takes about 40 minutes.
- On its route it passes most major hotels in city. Ask the driver for guidance when you purchase your ticket.
- The shuttles are lined up in the street just outside the arrival terminal. Tickets are purchased after boarding the bus, and the fare is currently NOK 80 (major credit cards accepted).
Airport Taxi
- There is also the option of booking an "airport taxi" to be shared with up to two other people (who might be going to entirely different destinations downtown; the taxi company takes care of all this coordination). This costs NOK 295,- per person, and needs to be booked in advance. Call the company Trøndertaxi at 07373 (From abroad call: + 47 930 07373) to arrange it. When booking you need to give your scheduled arrival time at Værnes airport, flight number, and destination adress/hotel downtown.
- If you also want a return airport taxi to the airport when leaving, you can book this at the same time (and same price). You then need to give the company your desired departure/pick-up address in Trondheim, time of your flight, and flight number, as well as a cell phone number where the company can notify you by SMS about the exact pick-up time. This notification will typically come a few hours before your departure (the evening before, if you leave in the morning).
Taxi
- Taxi from the airport to the city center can be more than NOK 500 depending on the time of day (night fares are more expensive).
